Aadavan Pushparaj, our Chief Operating Officer, is a rising star in the steel industry. Born in 1999 and educated at Colombo International School, Aadavan’s journey is marked by a commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
Throughout his academic career, Aadavan consistently achieved outstanding grades, underscoring his dedication to academic excellence. His leadership qualities became evident early on as he captained numerous sports teams during his school years, showcasing his ability to lead and inspire. Notably, he represented Sri Lanka in tennis, adding another layer to his athletic and leadership achievements.
Aadavan’s academic journey extended to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Finance. His educational background equips him with a unique perspective on business strategy and leadership.
As the Chief Operating Officer of Sonic Steel Industries, Aadavan is a visionary leader with a strategic mindset. His leadership style is marked by a calm demeanor, which shines under stressful situations. He is a skilled relationship-builder and communicator, fostering collaboration and inspiring teams to reach new heights.
His leadership ensures that Sonic Steel Industries remains at the forefront of innovation, introducing fresh ideas and pioneering solutions in the steel industry.

Our Journey through Steel and Dedication
Born in 1963 in Bandarawela, Sri Lanka, Pushparaj Utharampillai’s path to success has been a testament to the values of hard work and unwavering dedication. He began his journey in the world of steel with humble roots and a passion for growth.
Pushparaj’s educational foundation was laid at St. Mary’s College, Bandarawela, but his true education began in 1978 when he made the bold move to Colombo to embark on a career in steel. Over the next five years, he honed his skills as a steel broker, laying the foundation for a remarkable career.
In 1985, with a vision in mind and determination in his heart, Pushparaj co-founded a steel business with five partners. However, his entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment led him to take the next step in 1988 by establishing his very own company, Union Steel Pvt Ltd, specializing in steel imports and trading. This marked the inception of a remarkable journey in the steel industry.
Through the years, Pushparaj continued to innovate and expand. In 1996, he founded Union Steel Industries, a semi-industrial enterprise specializing in coil cutting. In 2000, he introduced Sonic Steel Industries, becoming the first Sri Lankan to offer cut-to-length facilities. The same year, he ventured into manufacturing high-end quality wire nails under the Sonic brand, showcasing his commitment to excellence.
One of the defining moments in Pushparaj’s career came in 2002 when he became the exclusive importer of Tata Steelium, a prestigious brand, in Sri Lanka. He introduced Tata Steelium to the Sri Lankan market, further solidifying his reputation for excellence. The brand was launched at Water’s Edge in 2007 by the Tata Steelium members, marking a significant achievement in the Sri Lankan steel industry.
In 2019, Pushparaj’s dedication to innovation shone once again as he introduced hot-dip barbed wire and BRC Welded Mesh, expanding his company’s product offerings.
Today, Sonic Steel stands as a symbol of his relentless pursuit of excellence in the steel industry. While we currently specialize in steel manufacturing, our vision extends to steel consumer products, including mesh and chicken wire, guided by our founder’s unwavering commitment to quality and hard work.
With a single focus on steel, Pushparaj Utharampillai and Sonic Steel have blazed a trail through the industry, exemplifying the values of honesty and diligent effort. Our journey is a testament to the incredible heights that can be reached through determination and dedication.
